About Common Margins:

Grand piano and semi-hollow electric guitar: no guitar effects, no overdubs, no edits or corrections.

On March 3, 1992, Tim and Michael headed out for an early morning session at a beautiful venue in Harrisonburg, VA — Alive Studios. The plan was to not have one — to not plan, write, or even talk about it at all. They’re friends, so they just hung out, enjoying the ride into the Shenandoah Valley; savoring the coffee and quiet conversation with the deeply thoughtful and highly skilled engineer, Joel Reinford.

Studio lights were dimmed; music was discovered and played; and the resulting sonic residue was encoded onto digital audio tape.

After the suite of pieces effortlessly rolled out of the two instruments, Mike began to play his take on Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower,” and Tim jumped right in — allowing Hendrix’s take on the tune to reverberate though his guitar. They closed with a meditative reading of the highly apropos “Shenandoah”, a tune they had played together many times.

Now, on the drive back, they talked plenty about it, recounting their adventures, and listened to the cassette Joel had given them of the session.

Common Margins was released in 1993 as an audio cassette. It was remastered for compact disc in August of 1998 at PMD Recording in Charlottesville, VA. There have been several pressings since, and a remaster is being considered.
